Malcolm Payne created the fourth edition of Modern Social Work Theory in order to present and review common theories that inform social work practice. His intention was to demonstrate how these theories can guide us and enhance our practice so that our work is aligned with policy, clients' needs and goals, and our own professional vision. Payne includes in-depth descriptions of how each group of theories developed.
The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 focuses on general debates about social work theory and how to apply it. Sections include the social construction of social work theory, evaluating social work theory, and connecting theory and practice. Part 2 reviews the main groups of social work theories, with many additional resources suggested for a more comprehensive understanding of each.
