Abstract

This study is about the opinions of final year undergraduate students of elementary school teacher department on introducing social emotional learning to the elementary school third and fourth grades students. Social emotional learning (SEL) was established by Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and defines five skills: a) Self-awareness, b) Self-management, c) Social awareness, d) Relationship skills, e) Responsible decision. In this study where the SEL is assumed to be macro skills, the students explained how they introduced these skills to young children, the techniques they used and the difficulties they faced in their personal survey and focus group discussions. Teacher candidates indicated that they used short videos, PowerPoint presentations and circle time sessions as techniques to introduce some of the SEL skills. Alternative techniques that can be used for introduction of social emotional learning skills for young students are discussed.
