Abstract

Today's international system is one of many nuances, which make it progressively harder to distinguish the limits of internal and external security. Taking advantage of this aspect, the Russian Federation exploited the ethnic component of Ukraine's and Georgia's internal affairs to achieve its goals, mainly stopping the expansion of the EU and NATO to its borders. By invoking the necessity to defend the rights of ethnic Russians situated on Ukrainian and Georgian territories, Moscow managed to seize the Crimean peninsula and strengthen the autonomy of the secessionist republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
