Abstract

The way a dissertation reads is quite different from a book, so length is an issue and not only the extension of the whole work (if it is too long, it might be too expensive to print), but also the number of pages of each chapter, that should be balanced and of readable length, providing natural breaks for the reader. While in the rst the author usually wants to establish a premise and afrm right away what their ndings will be, on a book there must be some suspense: the reader will know what the premise is, but will take pleasure in reading the work to nd out the outcome. While it might be a good option for people who have already published other books and enjoy some renown, it is a risky endeavor for academics beginning their careers because it will not be as highly regarded as if it had been published by a renowned house, not to mention that all distribution and publicity efforts will depend solely on the author.
