Human Resources Bridging the Soft Skills Gap How to Teach the Missing Basics to Today's Young Talent By Bruce Tulgan, 2015, San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass/Wiley.
As a safety professional and a person involved with hiring other OSH specialists, I approached my review of Bruce Tulgan's book from two perspectives. First, I considered the young people entering the workforce and what is necessary to help them work safely and productively. Second, I thought about the new generation of OSH professionals and the soft skills they need to succeed.
The principles espoused in this book are based on more than 20 years of research by Tulgan. While he recognizes that young people have much to offer in today's workplace, such as "new technical skills, new ideas, new perspective, new energy," he identifies three basics missing from the skill-set of the Millennial workforce, particularly Generation Z individuals (those born between 1990 and 1999). These basics are broadly categorized as professionalism, critical thinking and followership.
