In September of 1864, Confederate general Sterling Price left Arkansas with a force of twelve thousand men and invaded Missouri. Over the next four months his army fought thirteen major battles and over thirty skirmishes. They traveled almost fifteen hundred miles and destroyed nearly $10 million worth of property before limping back to Arkansas and then Texas. The campaign cost the Confederacy more than half of Price's force killed or captured.
