Plans to produce the human breast milk protein lactoferrin through the use of genetically engineered cows in the Netherlands will be allowed to continue despite the participation of a manufacturer of baby food in the projects.
The Dutch government has decided not to withdraw the licence for Gene Pharming Europe to continue its work with Herman, a bull that has been implanted with a human gene in the hope that its female offspring will produce lactoferrin - which is thought to inhibit gastroenteric infections - in their milk.
