Mohammed Iftikar Akhter

Consultant psychiatrist All Saint's Hospital, Birmingham, 1975-95 (b )1936; q Karachi 1960; FRCPsych), died of a myocardial infarct on 26 April 1998. After general medical training in Karachi he came to the Maudsley Hospital to specialise in psychiatry and subsequently worked at Long Grove Hospital, Surrey. At Birmingham he was university postgraduate tutor and course organiser as well as director of the MRCPsych course. He lectured and participated in conferences all over the world, and was the author of many papers on solventand alcohol misuse and drink driving. He was a valuable member of many committees, including the GMC, BMA (being chairman of the local division), and the Overseas Doctors Association. He leaves a wife, Taro, and a son and daughter (both medical students).

Maurice Berger

Former specialist in internal medicine Dallas (b South Africa; q Cape; MRCPE, DCH), d 13 November 1996. He worked at Guy's Hospital, London, in 1950-4, thereafter returning to Durban, where he practised and taught at the medical school. In 1979 he emigrated to Texas, where he had a flourishing practice in internal medicine. He leaves a wife, Ruth, two sons, and a daughter.
