The prevalence of pterygium in different geographic populations varies considerably. 1 Higher prevalence rates have been reported in countries with dry and dusty climates as well as high ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Hirst et al recently reported a rate of ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) of 9.8%. 1 To our knowledge, a similar audit has not been conducted in Canada where yearly UV exposures are lower.
This retrospective study of sequential histopathologic specimens from excised pterygia was approved by the Institutional Research Ethics Board of the University Health Network, University of Toronto. Pathology reports were reviewed to identify any cases of dysplasia. Between July 2002 and July 2010, 1127 consecutive pterygium specimens were excised from patients seen at Toronto Western Hospital. None had any clinical suspicion of OSSN. The clinical data are summarised in table 1 . There were no specimens with OSSN identified in 1127 cases. To our knowledge, there have been no cases of recurrence with OSSN or invasive squamous cell carcinoma in any of our study patients.
