Abstract

After several decades living under a strict socialist economic regime, the Cuban government has assumed in the last decade the challenge of updating its economic and political model. In the VIth Congress of the Cuban Communist Party which took place in 2011, there was proposed an ambitious program with 313 reforms which are considered necessary to implement in order to achieve a sustainable economic system. The article aims to analyze the recent economic performance in Cuba and points out the institutional challenges which will have to be faced in the near future. Firstly, the article describes the economic performance of the island in the recent years, then the paper revises the agenda with the reforms proposed by the VIth Congress is presented and some recent developments up to 2011. Through showing the evolution of these arrangements, the article identifies and highlights the main challenges which are meant to be incorporated by the Cuban society related to the institutional changes that those reforms will bring to the economic culture.
