Abstract [Objective] The paper aimed to provide a basis for quality control of compound sulfamonomethoxine sodium propolis solution. [Method] High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was used to determine the contents of sulfamonomethoxine sodium and trimethoprim simultaneously in compound sulfamonomethoxine sodium propolis solution. [Result] Sulfamonomethoxine sodium and trimethoprim showed a linear relationship within the concentration of 10 - 500 µg/mL under the following chromatographic conditions: Kromasil C^sub 18^ column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 µm), mobile phase 0.02 mol/L phosphoric acid solution-methanol (80:20, V/V), detection wavelength 270 nm, flow rate 1.0 mL/min, and column temperature 30°C. The average recoveries were 99.3% and 99.4%, respectively. [Conclusion] The method is accurate and feasible, and can determine sulfamonomethoxine sodium and trimethoprim simultaneously in compound sulfamonomethoxine sodium propolis solution.

Compound sulfamonomethoxine sodium propolis solution is developed by sulfamonomethoxine sodium, trimethoprim, propolis and suitable solvent. As one of the sulfa-drugs with the most powerful antibacterial effect and prevention efficiency against bacterial infection in livestock and poultry7, sulfamonomethoxine sodium has good curative effect with low acetylated rate in blood and urine, so crystalluria and haematuria rarely occurs. It is generally used to treat respiratory and urinary system diseases and bacillary dysentery in clinic, and it also has good curative effect for a variety of parasitic diseases. Propolis contains flavonoids, organic acids, terpenoids, alcohols and rich amino acids and vitamins, which is known as "brown golden" . Modern research has demonstrated that propolis has a wide range of biological activities, with strong suppression effect on a variety of pathogenic microorganisms, and it also has strong immunomodulatory effect 1-5 . Compared with the existing preparation compound sulfamonomelhoxine sodium solution, new preparation not only expands the antibacterial spectrum and enhances antibacterial and bactericidal effect, but also has lowr side effects. Besides, it enhances and promotes immunization and growth of egg and meat-type poultry, with no influence on egg production , and also has a sustained-release and eontrolled-release effect.
Currently, there is no simultaneous detection method for sulfamonomethoxine sodium and trimethoprim in Veterinary Pharmacopoeia oj The Peoples Republic of China (2005) , and sulfamonomethoxine sodium is detected by dead-stop titration while trimethoprim is detected by ultraviolet spectrophotometry 6 .
