Abstract

Fast becoming a well known name in malaria research, Hemingway would later return to LSHTM with both a Medical Research Council fellowship and a Royal Society Junior Fellowship, allowing her to build a team of researchers dedicated to understanding insecticide resistance, including the impact of agricultural insecticides on mosquitoes in Sri Lanka and resistance patterns in blackflies that transmit onchocerciasis in west Africa, helping devise a rotation strategy to allow continued control. "Janet's work on insecticide resistance merits particular mention as a major contribution to science but it is her gift for leadership and capacity development that make her stand out", said Peter Winstanley, professor of clinical pharmacology and chair of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Warwick, UK. "Since Janet became director at LSTM in 2001 it has grown substantially in both size and quality.
