Brad Reynolds was lucky to find a mentor early in his career.
At age 19, Reynolds was named chief technology officer at an internet service provider called Internet Access Group. The company's founder, Stephen Abbey, would become his mentor and business partner. He and Abbey went on to start and sell two other local tech companies: Expedient and Mongoose Metrics. But if Reynolds had never met Abbey? "I would be questioning whether I'd be where I'm at right now," he said. Now they're starting a cybersecurity company called Securable.io. The company gives clients a security score - and several tools to help them raise that score. It pays special attention to security risks caused by employees. For instance, Securable.io can tell if someone's email password has been hacked or if a sales person has downloaded the company's customer database, said Reynolds, the CEO. His advice for aspiring entrepreneurs: "Sit in a room with somebody who's done it day in and day out. ... Pick the people who've done it before and attach your cart to them," he said.
What's one lesson you've learned about starting companies?
I used to think I was right until proven wrong, but now I think I'm wrong until proven right, because I've been wrong so many times. I think I know what customers what, I build something, then I find out I'm totally wrong. Even though you're going to push hard and be confident, you're going to be wrong most of the time.
