The beneficial reuse of coal combustion residuals reached a high point in 2015 with 52% of coal ash repurposed, according to the American Coal Ash Association, but the country still has a long way before all of the material is recycled.
According to the ACAA's annual CCR production and use survey released Oct. 12, the recycling of coal ash had previously peaked at 48%, and has for the first time exceeded the long-held goal of 50% utilization. In 2015, over 117 million tons of CCR material was produced, and over 61 million tons was reused.
"The best way to deal with your waste problems is to quit throwing it away, so we want to encourage these kinds of uses," said John Ward, a spokesman for the ACAA.
