Putnam's Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis uses qualitative and quantitative research to examine how realistic the American Dream is in the United States. Putnam received national attention for his 2000 seminal work entitled, Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community. This text examines the lack of membership in community and political organizations as well as the decline in social interaction. Putnam's Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, however, brings the topic of socioeconomic inequality to the forefront with his discussion on the decline of opportunity for low-income children and the continued increasing division of financial lines. This book fills a necessary void and gap for the invisible, ignored, and far too frequently overlooked low-income individuals who the American Dream will always simply be a dream and never be a realty.
