This dissertation explores the history of the homoerotic novel in Mexico, in conjunction with the creation of the nation; how essential the gay subject was, is and continues to be for the Mexican nation. Chapter one explores a brief history of the gay subject since pre-Colombian times, up to the XX Century. Chapter two explores and analyzes the gay subject in the XIX and XX century homoerotic novel. By the end of this chapter we discovered that the written word created subjectivity for the gay person. Chapter three and four analyze how this new subject started to acquire legitimation through the concept of love in the middle of an irrational wave of homophobia. Chapter five reveals that while there is progress in the way of gay rights, by the end of the XX century, there is division within the gay community based on social class, gender roles and a whole spectrum of sexual expericences.
