A 2010 survey of undergraduate students at more than 50 higher education institutions around the United States asked, "What is most difficult about research"? 84 per cent of participants answered "getting started" (Head and Eisenberg, 2010). It is six years later, and many of those working with undergraduate students on academic research and writing find this statistic still painfully true and regularly assign readings hoping that will aid students in their academic growth in this area. However, these books can be quite overwhelming to students, and often don't explain to students why mastering academic research and writing is considered so crucial to their academic success.
Therefore, The Student's Survival Guide to Research is a welcome and refreshing primer on the subject and is replete with useful and valuable information about the academic research and writing process that students can refer to throughout their academic experiences. Although other books and websites offer similar information on concepts like creating search strategies, evaluation of sources and effective writing strategies (Lee et al ., 2014; Mligo, 2012), McAdoo's book differs by providing context around the...
