Advocates brace for alternate registration system from Trump administration
South Asian-American civil rights, labor and other proimmigrant advocacy groups have hailed last week's decision by the Obama administration to dismantle what they believe was the "deeply flawed, patently ineffective, and openly discriminatory" National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) program - also known as special registration - effective immediately.
The activists acknowledged, however, that they were bracing for even more draconian antiimmigrant laws and special registration systems from the incoming Trump administration. They also said they stood read to mount a concerted strategy to counter any discriminatory and anti-American and antiConstitution actions.
South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), in lauding the announcement by the Department of Homeland Security on a final rule that formally ends NSEERS, said, "As a national South Asian organization that has since its inception been fighting the deeply discriminatory NSEERS program as well as racial and religious profiling writ large, SAALT thanks the Department of Homeland Security, White House, and the Obama Administration for their decision to rescind the regulation behind this dormant program."
