Abstract

Atmospheric pressure MALDI mass spectrometry imaging of tissues and cells at 1.4-mm lateral resolution for spatially tracking metabolites in model organisms such as insects18. In the field of neuroscience, MSI investigations have furthered understanding of the distribution of neuroactive substances and, thus, have helped scientists rationalize neuronal signal transduction and factors influencing it19,20. Targeted imaging of predefined, labeled compounds21 and untargeted imaging of biomolecules in both healthy and cancerous tissue have guided presurgical, postsurgical, and in situ surgical decision making22,23.
