Power systems which consist of thermal units with or without take or pay fuel contracts need a proper unit commitment. Proper unit commitment is needed to acquire the generator scheduling plan with minimum total operating cost while also meeting the fuel contracts. Genetic algorithm based on priority list approach is used to solve unit commitment problem. Unit commitment without fuel constraint is simulated to obtain total operating cost and to check whether fuel used by take or pay units meet the constraint or not. Unit commitment with fuel constraint is solved by two methods: adding a constraint to the genetic algorithm and repairing power dispatch, especially in Lagrange function. This simulation is tested on a study case 25-unit system which consists of 10 take or pay units. Simulation results from unit commitment without and with fuel constraint is compared. Unit commitment with fuel constraint using repaired dispatch produces more optimum power output combination with better total operating cost.
