Number two pencils are passé with tests administered by Computer Assisted Testing Service (CATS). CATS designs and administers computer-based exams for the FAA, the FCC, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association at its 400 worldwide testing centers. Its SilverCATS platform administers testing over the Internet. Exams are offered for a variety of pilot, airplane mechanic, airplane inspector, and radio operator licenses. CATS teamed with HZ Assessments to form Comira, which develops psychometric tests for various state boards and national professional associations. CATS was founded in 1988 by aviation professionals. The company was acquired by fellow testing firm PSI Services in late 2016.
