Rationale: Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis have been shown to have sinonasal tissue deficiencies in 25(OH)D3, 1α-hydroxylase and 1,25(OH)D3. Furthermore, sinonasal tissue deficiencies in 1α-hydroxylase are associated with worse quality of life. What is unclear is the role of vitamin D deficiency in tissue level vitamin D metabolism and inflammation. In these studies, we address this question by examining the impact of dietary vitamin D deficiency in an atopic mouse model of chronic rhinosinusitis (Af-CRS).
Methods: Female Balb/c C mice were fed either a control or vitamin D3 (VitD) deficient diet for 4 weeks to achieve 25(OH)D3 deficiency. Mice were then sensitized i.p. with 200ug Aspergillus fumigatus (Af), and one week later given 50ug Af i.n. every three days for 4 weeks while being maintained on control or...
