Book's topic Analytics is an integral part and fundamental component of almost every aspect of chemistry: anyone studying chemistry or other natural sciences and laboratory technicians are all required to be familiar with this field. As a result of the plethora of recent advances and new developments, analytics is often perceived to be a Bpatchwork^ of various techniques. Analytical chemistry: a chemist and laboratory technicians toolkit by Bryan M. Ham and Aihui MaHam intends to give not only an overview of the most important analytical techniques but also to combine the theoretical aspects of analytical techniques with practical hints, up to the point of discussing various methods of troubleshooting
with respect to a large number of practical problems students and/or laboratory technicians might face in both their courses and everyday laboratory life. This practical approach to the individual techniques is not only made clear in the books text but also in the CD-ROM included; the latter contains both brief synopses of several of the books chapters and an interactive program, called ChemTech-Tool Kit, which is not only intended to be a teaching tool but also to simplify everyday tasks in the laboratory.
Contents The book consists of 33 chapters, six appendices and an accompanying CD-ROM. After a concise overview of the standard terms and tools used in analytical chemistry (including standard glassware etc.), typical procedures in the laboratory are introduced, and the required mathematics (including the use of scientific calculators) are discussed. One full chapter deals with laboratory safety, while the following chapters discuss aspects of statistics and plotting and graphing of results (shown using the ChemTech-Tool Kit). The importance of computer-based calculations in analytical chemistry is taken into account in Chap. 7, giving a brief introduction to Microsoft Excel, while Chap. 8 covers the preparation of laboratory solutions (again via the ChemTech-Tool Kit). The following chapters detail the...
