GUWAHATI: Nongthombam Biren Singh scripted history when he was sworn in on Wednesday as the first chief minister of a BJP government in Manipur. 56-year-old Singh was a national footballer and member of the Border Security Force team which won the Durand Cup in 1981.
After resigning from BSF, Singh started a regional newspaper 'Naharolg go Thoudang.' Though he had no formal training in journalism, his newspaper became a big hit.
He was arrested in 2002 on sedition charges, after his newspaper allegedly published some material supporting extremists.
