Owners of the Intermountain Power Project in Utah will stop operating coal-fired units in 2025.
The two-unit, 1,800-MW power plant near Delta, Utah, owned by the Intermountain Power Agency began operating in 1986. But the plant is facing the loss of existing customers, less demand for coal-fired electricity and environmental regulatory issues, the Intermountain Power Agency said May 23.
"We are saddened to announce this decision, but factors beyond our control make continued operation of the coal units unfeasible after their current power purchase agreements expire," Ted Olson, chairman of the Intermountain Power Agency board of directors said in a statement.
The plant's coal suppliers in 2016, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence, were Alton Coal Development LLC, from its Coal Hollow Mine in Kane County, Utah; Bowie Resource Partners LLC, from its Sufco mine in Sevier County, Utah, and Skyline Mine No. 3 in Carbon County, Utah; Arch Coal Inc., from its West Elk Mine in Gunnison County, Colo.; and Murray Energy Corp., from its...
