US retailer Best Buy is to sell apple's 10GB and 20GB Windows iPods and the 10GB Mac iPod from September 15.
The iPods will now be available in over 500 Best Buy stores, 35 Apple retail stores and 225 CompUSA stores. The iPod is a pocket sized digital music player which, in its 10GB form, has a 2,000 song capacity. Following the October release of the 10GB Mac iPod two Windows compatible versions were subsequently released in July to overcome the fact that Apple's iTunes software is not compatible with Windows.
Apple chose not to release a windows version of its iTunes software, releasing instead separate Windows models of the iPod with syncing software from MusicMatch.
Analysis company Needham predicts shipments in Q4 of half a million - last year Apple shipped 125,000 - and puts the increase down to the release of the Windows iPod.
The company also predicts worldwide portable music player sales of over 12m this year and 25m next, suggesting that Apple could have a 15% to 20% share of that market.
Prior to the release of the Windows compatible iPod MediaFour, TrentSoft and DataViz had all released software for syncing with the iPod.
Best Buy will be selling the 10GB Windows iPod for USD399, the 20GB Windows iPod for USD499 and the 10GB Mac iPod for USD399.
