Looks like we can officially kiss Miller Freeman goodbye. Leaks from outside VNU-which bought most non-high-tech MF U.S. properties (jewelry/real estate/construction/travel) in July for $650M-suggest that the MF name, as well as its San Francisco headquarters and upwards of 140 Bay Area employees, could be past-tense by year-end. MF spokeswoman Virginia Stefan confirmed reports that VNU likely will announce this week that a consolidation will shutter the San Francisco facility by first quarter 2001; with no MF brands produced there any longer, Golden Gate overhead apparently is deemed unnecessary. VNU will oversee remaining MF offices (New York, Dallas, and California locations in Laguna Beach and Santa Monica) from brand- new East Village digs in NYC.
