The across-the-board double-digit increases for traffic to business information sites in January are not especially surprising, but the strength of the comeback is impressive nonetheless. Almost all of the construction titles posted big gains. The Hanley Wood titles like BuilderOnline.com (+16.37% page views, +38.24% UVs) and especially DreamHouseSource.com (+74.53% PVs, +65.98% UVs) grew in January as did ContractingBusiness.com (+19.14% PVs, +41.73% UVs).
Some sites went against expectations. The agriculture segment, which usually spikes in the colder months, was relatively flat, with Meredith's Agriculture.com (+14.34% PVs, -5.74%% UVs) showing mixed performance and AgWeb.com (-0.86% PVs, -19.07% down). With Macworld hitting in January we were a little surprised that MacTech.com (-7.87% UVs) and Macforge.com (+4.54% UVs) didn't register greater interest in Steve Jobs' rollout of some new products. Perhaps we will see more interest in March numbers off of the announcements around the new iPhone software development kits and the gadget's new appeal to enterprise customers. According to reports, over 100,000 downloads of the iPhone SDK occurred in just the last week.
Our own Access Intelligence (min's b2b's parent company) sites also performed well in January. Both AviationToday.com (+28.72% PVs, +32.58% UVs) and DefenseDaily.com (+25% PVs, +15.75% UVs) spiked. And StudioDaily.com (+33.90% PVs, +43.93% UVs) was especially impressive.
For Hollywood, of course, January marks the beginning of the big Oscar rush and a ton of "For Your Consideration" advertising. And so both Nielsen's HollywoodReporter.com (+22.04% PVs) and Reed's Variety.com (+20.86% PVs, +13.87% UVs) started their run up to the late Feb. awards. Perhaps ironically, Reed Business Information sites enjoyed a number of boosts in January even as parent company Reed Elsevier works with banker UBS to sell off the RBI unit. PublishersWeekly.com (+29.54% PVs, +18.61% UVs) topped 1 million page views for the month, as sister sites LibraryJournal.com (+12.24% PVs, +5.96% UVs) and SchoolLibraryJournal.com (+17.04% PVs, +5.18% UVs) also rose. The latest word from Reed Elsevier is that in a down market like this the sale could take a while. The online side is one of the strongest growth segments in the RBI business right now.
