Self-Identified Needs of Individuals Experiencing Homelessness in City of Whittier: A Descriptive Study

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the self-identified needs of individuals experiencing homelessness (IEH) in Whittier. The study consisted of quantitative and qualitative research. Needs of IEH were assessed through survey. It was found that there are plenty of resources in Whittier that provide food for those in need. The most verbalized immediate need was access to hygiene supplies and shower services. Services identified to be in highest need were permanent housing, emergency housing, dental services, income assistance programs, and health services. Regarding access, emergency housing and transportation support services were found to be the most difficult to access. Values and beliefs of community members in relation to the city’s state of homelessness were assessed by survey. To understand whether the City of Whittier has the capacity to meet the needs of IEH interviews were conducted with two service providers and one city official.
