Jeff Lin's biography reads like the classic Silicon Valley success story the one where the techie works night and day in his garage to come up with a better computer mousetrap. He starts a company, gains fame and fortune, cashes out and then goes sailing. Lin hasn't cashed out yet, and by all reports is not particularly fond of sailing. Lin, a computer engineer, founded Asante Technologies Inc. with his partner Wilson Wong, and today remains its president and CEO. The San Jose-based company gained a very high profile in the Macintosh networking market and has since moved into PC networking. Recently we talked to Lin about Asante and networking.
VARBusiness: Would you describe your company as a second-tier networking player?
Lin: Yes, if by first tier you mean SynOptics, Cabletron, 3Com, Cisco. Most of them are heavily involved in enterprise networking. We are involved in the departmental and workgroup networking areas. We try to provide products that have the best price/performance for...
