During the winter season, when the common cold is uncommonly common, propolis, a by-product from the beehive, is one supplement that many knowledgeable health-seekers take for prevention, along with their daily vitamin and mineral routine.
Zinc lozenges containing a liberal amount of propolis are often used to alleviate the raspy voice and sore throat that frequently accompanies a cold or the flu. And some alternative doctors recommend them to patients, rather than patent medicines.
A researcher in the Russian Ministry of Health administered propolis to 260 patients with throat inflammation. Bee propolis helped relieve 90 percent of patients with pains from swallowing, soreness and dry, raw throat.
In his book Prescription for Natural Healing, James Balch, M.D., a prestigious physician who is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, writes the following concerning Russian research with propolis: "...Reports proclaim good results against inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, dry cough and throat...."
