In his review of the Homefront knife ( Officer.com/12316595 ) Frank Borelli begins with "For as far back as I can remember I've carried a folding knife in my pocket. One of the things I was taught in my early teens was never to leave the house without a knife and a lighter (two essential survival tools)."
Do you agree? If so, we've put together a short list just for you.

From Kershaw Knives / KAI USA LTD
The Launch 5's CPM154 powdered metallurgy blade steel offers more uniform distribution of carbides—so it takes and holds an excellent edge. It also provides good corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and toughness. The blade is stonewashed for good looks and to hide use-scratches.
To lighten the Launch 5's weight, the handles and integrated backspacer are made of durable anodized aluminum. A machined texture on the handles provides a secure grip. The Launch 5 opens with a push button, recessed so that it is level with the flat of the handle. This is a safety feature and makes it harder for the knives to accidentally deploy. Left-handers can use their index finger instead of their thumb to press the blade-release/lock button. A reversible pocketclip is included and a lanyard tie-off is built into the butt end of the knife.

From Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT)
CRKT®has released the Rakkasan™ tactical fixed blade. Designed by Austin McGlaun of Columbus, Georgia with the Forged By War® program, it's inspired by the duties of his brothers and sisters in arms who are still abroad.
Rakkasan, is reminiscent of the WWII paratroopers from the 187thinfantry regiment. It's the Japanese translation of "umbrella for falling," because they were completely unfamiliar with the American combat tactic. Though its name harkens back to another time, it's prepped and ready for a 21stcentury battlefield with an SK5 carbon steel blade and a powder coated finish. The deep belly shape is multi-functional and serves just as well as a utility blade as it does a backup defense tool.
