Earlier this year we reviewed three major versions of DOS for PCs. The contenders were IBM's PC DOS 6.1, Microsoft Corp.'s MS-DOS 6.2 (January 24, page 59), and Novell Inc.'s DOS 7.0 (May 2, page 107). Although it was the oldest of the reviewed products, IBM's PC DOS 6.1 earned the highest score in those reviews. Now the best gets even better with PC DOS, Version 6.3 from IBM Personal Software Products Division.
In this upgrade, IBM has caught up with Microsoft's innovations in MS-DOS 6.2, while maintaining the advantages it had in Version 6.1 (principally, fuller utility programs and support for more devices, plus very good printed documentation). These innovations include overwrite confirmation by the COPY, MOVE, and XCOPY commands, commas in large numbers, MSCDEX, single-pass DISKCOPY, and the wonderful additions to the interactive boot process that allow you to suppress loading of the data compression device driver and to execute your AUTOEXEC.BAT file (or any batch file) a single line at a...
