In our subnotebook comparison back in August, we pointed out that subnotebooks in general were not ready to run against the big dogs. The one exception to this theory is IBM's ThinkPad 701C, otherwise known as the "butterfly subnote." As the nickname suggests, what makes this system stand apart from the ho-hum subnotebook crowd is its innovative keyboard design. Where most subnotebooks have small, cramped, and usually poorly laid out keyboards, IBM found a way to split, tuck, and fold its full-size notebook keyboard into and under the top of the ThinkPad system. The result is a keyboard that is large enough to actually use on a daily basis and small enough to really want to take with you. In many ways, this is a notebook shrunk down to a more usable size, rather than a subnotebook trying to pretend it's all grown up. And with the additional features of quality construction, inspiring expandability and outstanding customer support, the ThinkPad 701C is a solid choice in an otherwise not-quite-ready-for-prime-time arena.
