IBM ANNOUNCED several neW Extensible Markup Language (XML) initiatives last week at the XML '98 show in Chicago, including a XML Web site, nine development tools, and a graphics technology that the company co-developed with Adobe Systems.
The tools are available for free at IBM's alphaWorks Web site (www .alphaWorks.ibm.com/Home), where developers can download preview versions. IBM uses the site as a way to gauge users' interest in specific areas of development.
One developer said he was glad to see IBM taking a leadership role with XML development tools.
"I think IBM is going to do great things for XML," said Scott Parnell, a software applications developer at Xerox, in Webster, N.Y. "All of the underlying tools we need to build applications are just starting to arrive."
