Abstract

In his Meditations, Descartes proposes a progressive path to reach the truth. This method forces him to assume that he accesses the truth of his theses within the text itself. In this study, the author compares the first meditation of Descartes with several passages from Sextus Empiricus' Outlines of Pyrrhonism. In relation to their method, both seem to be paradigms of the same tendency, skepticism; but in the expression of these authors, an opposition is denoted as to the theses they expound. Based upon this the author explains why the presentation set out by Descartes is not an adequate strategy to demonstrate his achievements.
