The aim of this book, as stated in the introduction, is to cover '... the creation and development of the participatory global computer network [and] ... the history of the Net and the impact it is having on the lives of people today.' It is a collection of articles written over a period of four years, some of which have already been published online, arranged in four sections designed to be read independently.
Part I deals with the Net as it is in what another author has referred to as `the ever-changing Now' and is mainly intended for 'newbies.'
