Shawn Cowie and Andy Bohl earned titles in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, respectively, during the NHRA Carolina Nationals, but the big stars of the event were John Labbous Jr. and Todd Ewing, who both nearly doubled. Labbous drove to a win in Super Comp and a runner-up fi nish in Super Gas, and Ewing scored a victory in the Top Dragster presented by Racing RVs class and was a runner-up in Top Sportsman presented by Racing RVs. Other champions from the event were Frank Aragona Jr. (Comp), Nick Chiles (Super Stock), Kenneth Stott (Stock), Dean Mathauser (Super Gas), and Jerry Albert (Top Sportsman).
Labbous, who was a double winner at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte last April, ran his streak at zMAX Dragway to an incredible 23-1 after driving partner Anthony Bertozzi's dragster to a pair of fi nals. Labbous won the Super Comp title after opponent Amanda Boicesco encountered a problem and ran nearly a second under the index with a 7.974.
