In Gender Matters From School to Work, Jane Gaskell draws together some of the writing she has produced in the past ten years on the adolescent experience of moving from high school to postsecondary education and/or the workforce. Canadian experiences are under-reported in the literature, and studies of the transition process for females remain virtually nonexistent. Gaskell's work constitutes a significant contribution to our understanding of how young girls experience high school and carry these messages with them into future training and schooling sites.
The book begins with an extensive, and extremely significant, critical introduction by Sandra Acker. Drawing on her own impressive work and that of others in the tradition of critical, qualitative sociology, Acker frames Gaskell's work, interprets her findings, and highlights their conceptual and practical applicability.
