There are four means by which parapsychologists hope to eventually convince the larger scientific community that psi exists: well controlled and rigorously obtained empirical observations; theoretical constructs that both account for the data of psi and are consistent with mainstream science; demonstrated practical applications; and, finally, protocols leading to direct, personal experience. Like many popular parapsychological books of recent vintage-Stephan A. Schwartz's new book, Opening to the Infinite, touches upon all four of these approaches. However, there can be no doubt that Schwartz's greatest contributions as both a researcher and a writer in the field lie in the area of psi's practical applications. I do not know of any other researcher whose documented practical applications of psi are now in the public record who has contributed more than Schwartz to this important domain of parapsychological knowledge.
Most parapsychologists come to the field with a background in experimental psychology. Others receive their academic training in physics or medicine or philosophy or education. However, Schwartz brings to parapsychology a unique U.S. military background-having served as the Special Assistant for Research and Analysis to the Chief of Naval Operations. As...
