POLITICAL PARTIES OPEN CAMPAIGNS. Nicaragua's five political parties opened their campaigns for November's general elections, which could see the return of the leftist Sandinistas, reports AP (Aug. 19, 2006). Most opinion polls found Sandinista candidate Daniel Ortega (president from 1985-1990), in a dead heat with former banker Eduardo Montealegre, of the Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance, a break away from the ruling Constitutional Liberal Party. On Nov. 5 Nicaraguans will also choose their national assembly.

MUNICIPAL MODERNIZATION. Nicaragua is seeking US$5 million from The Inter-American Development Bank for Managua Municipal Modernization II (NI-L1010). The program aims to modernize the Municipality of Managua to improve management and create conditions more attractive to investment, while contributing to reduction of poverty.
