In this issue of The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education we continue to present our Black- White Higher Education Equality Index. Using a wide variety of available statistics from the government, testing organizations, professional associations, our internal surveys, and other sources, each quarter we track the progress of African Americans in higher education compared to the progress achieved by whites.
After 11 years of steady progress from 1986 to 1997, the Index remained virtually unchanged during the four-year period from 1997 to 2001. But for the next two years the Index produced a generally upward trend. Over the next three years there were small hills and...
