Lino Graglia: Racial Polemicist at the University of Texas
In 1986 Professor Lino A. Graglia of the University of Texas School of Law was under consideration by the Reagan administration for a seat on the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. But Reagan was forced to abandon the nomination when Graglia admitted that he had referred to African-American children as "pickaninnies." At the time of his nomination, Professor Graglia urged Austin residents to frustrate a court-ordered busing desegregation plan. Graglia said that he doubted that "the net contribution of the Constitution to our national well-being had been positive."
