War has always been a part of Michael Howard's life. Born in the aftermath of the Great War, he came of age in World War II and served with distinction as a combat officer in the Coldstream Guards. Graduating from Oxford, he taught war studies at the University of London and later at Oxford, eventually becoming Regius professor, before ending his teaching career as Robert Lovett professor at Yale.
