This is an excellent and engaging account of the battle of Flodden, 1513. Despite the wealth of scholarship on the debate over the military revolution in early modern Europe, histories of specific sixteenth-century campaigns have been rare in the recent English-language historiography. Such accounts are, however, important to understanding the nature and conduct of warfare in this period.
A central theme is a defence of the reputation of James IV of Scotland. Barr challenges notions of a vainglorious king leading his people to disaster. He argues instead that James was a reluctant warrior in 1513, not seeking glory but...
