Every nurse and midwife in the UK will receive a copy of the new NMC code of conduct in the post at the beginning of next month.
Copies of the Code, which was drawn up by the NMC following consultation, and which comes into effect on March 31, sets out the standards that nurses must uphold. The document updates the 2008 version.
New standards on the fundamentals of care that registrants must provide, which include ensuring patients are given enough food and drink and are kept clean, are included.
Other standards about using social media, reporting concerns, delegation and a professional duty to take action in an emergency while off duty also form part of the Code.
The NMC is posting the document to its 680,000 registrants.
