The face of the film and video industry has changed once again as two more high-profilevendors have decided the time has come to buddy up. While such announcements always come as a bit of a surprise, the pairing of Autodesk and Discreet Logic represents just the latest example of consolidation in an industry whose history is replete with such mergers and acquisitions.
Announced just before press time, this latest acquisition echoed many of the same themes that characterized the announcement of Avid's acquisition of Softimage, a deal unveiled only a couple of months ago. As was the case in that deal, the participants in this latest pairing see an advantage to combining one's strength in the 3D graphics world with the other's strength in editing and special effects.
