The import duty on most TV components such as integrated circuit (IC), transistors, diode, crystal resonator, liquid crystal and cathode Ray Tube (CRT) have been abolished to boost TV set industry.
CRT accounts for 40% to 60% of the production costs of TV sets. Since 1996, CRT requirement in the country has been supplied mostly by PT Toshiba Display Devices Indonesia (TDDI), a subsidiary of Japan's Toshiba. Another producer of CRT in the country is LG Electronics Display Devices Indonesia (LG-EDDI).
TDDI was previously named PT Display Devices Indonesia established in 1994 by a consortium of Indonesian TV set producers namely PT Tabung Gambar Indonesia in cooperation with Toshiba Corp and Sumitomo Corp. A year later Orion Electric Co. Ltd joined in the venture.
