In March 2008 the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to establish a single national registration and accreditation scheme for health professions from 1 July 2010. Following its March 2008 meeting, COAG published the Intergovernmental Agreement for a National Registration and Accreditation Scheme for the Health Professions, which set out the agreed framework for the new scheme.
In November 2008 legislation was enacted in Queensland that provides for the adoption of a national law to facilitate the development and implementation of the scheme. The Health Practitioner Regulation (Administrative Arrangements) National Law Act 2008 (QId) establishes the structure of the new scheme in line with the COAG Agreement.
The national registration and accreditation scheme will consist of the following bodies:
