Perl is an important programming language because of its web site use with the common gateway interface (CGI). It is not a particularly modern or fast language, but it is wonderful for doing text pattern matching, which is what most of the web is about right now. Perl 5 introduces a new object orientation, that is why these books will be constantly on reserve or illegally squirreled away at your system administrator's desk. Neither book is better than the other, and both books will be popular.
